What is #NYGivesDay?

#NYGivesDay is a 24-hour online challenge to celebrate nonprofits across the state of New York. Thousands of nonprofits across the Empire State will work together to raise awareness, collect donations, and build a stronger sense of philanthropy throughout their local communities.


When is #NYGivesDay?

#NYGivesDay 2016 will be held on #GivingTuesday, Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 from 12 AM Eastern Time - Midnight. The giving takes place online at www.NYGivesDay.org.


Why is #NYGivesDay being held on #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday is a national day of giving that occurs on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday each year.

#NYGivesDay builds on the focus of #GivingTuesday by engaging many of the major nonprofit networks and leaders in New York State to encourage more nonprofits and donors to participate. Experience with such days of giving shows that when participation increases, donors have more choices and overall giving to nonprofits increases.


Who is leading #NYGivesDay?

The New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON) and United Way of New York State (UWNYS) along with their technology partner, GiveGab, formed a partnership to launch #NYGivesDay, New York’s first ever statewide day of giving in 2016. NYCON and UWNYS work throughout the year to strengthen and support nonprofits around the state. GiveGab is a year-round platform that nonprofits can leverage for online fundraising and supporter engagement. #NYGivesDay will bring resources and attention to the nonprofit sector and the crucial role it plays in New York’s communities. Other nonprofit networks and organizations that support nonprofits are welcome to join in and promote New York Gives Day.

Why should nonprofits participate in #NYGivesDay?

#NYGivesDay aims to help nonprofits in communities across the state of New York by raising awareness and funds for a variety of causes.

How can my nonprofit participate?

To be eligible to participate, nonprofits must be 501(c) organizations that are in good standing and are either incorporated or operate in the state of New York. Nonprofits that service New York State residents may also participate and can reach out to info@nygivesday.org.


Does my organization have to be registered with New York state to participate in the day?

Yes. Any organization that is based in New York State, or serves New York State residents, and wishes to fundraise, must register with the Attorney General's office. To see if you're registered with the Attorney General's office, you can search for your organization here. You can also learn more at CharitiesNYS.com.


Does it cost anything to participate?

There is no cost to participate. The technology platform behind New York Gives Day, GiveGab, has elected to waive their 5% platform fee for any nonprofit that participates on November 29, 2016. A standard credit card company fee of 2.2% + 30¢ for all major credit cards (3.5% + 30¢ for American Express) on a per transaction basis will still apply. Donors have the option to cover this fee for the organization.


Who is GiveGab?

GiveGab is an online crowdfunding platform designed exclusively for nonprofits. The platform helps nonprofit leaders raise money, engage donors, and manage volunteers quickly and efficiently. Nonprofits who participate in New York Gives Day can also utilize GiveGab year-round. GiveGab is based in New York State with offices located in Ithaca, NY.


Do we have to use the www.NYGivesDay.org platform in order to take part in #NYGivesDay?

No. NYCON and UWNYS know that many successful regional and local giving initiatives have been in place across the state for years. You may even do one just for your nonprofit. We think that’s great. Please do what works for you.

However, for many of our nonprofit members and affiliates there is no organized, affordable platform that provides one place to learn all about day of giving best practices, provides online tools, resources and assistance as well as access to a trusted, user-friendly technology platform. While we encourage you all to do your research, we wanted to provide at least one trusted tool you could use.

Additionally, if you would like to be eligible for prizes offered by New York Gives Day and its sponsors, you will need to use the platform, as only online gifts processed through www.NYGivesDay.org will count toward the prizes.


Can we be sure that the NYGivesDay.org platform will be reliable and not crash from the influx of traffic on one day?

Yes, the technology provider for #NYGivesDay, GiveGab, has a track record of 100% uptime with no performance degradation for ALL of their giving days. GiveGab runs on highly-available, secure, scalable, market-best Cloud provider technologies. Their data and sites are fault-tolerant with numerous “real-time” backups.

Donors


Who can donate?

Any individual who has a credit or debit card and access to the internet can donate to nonprofit organizations on www.NYGivesDay.org on November 29, 2016 from 12am midnight - November 30, 2016 ET.


How can I make a donation?

Individuals can donate online via credit or debit card on November 29, 2016 at www.NYGivesDay.org or using links sent by participating nonprofits. There is no cost for organizations to participate. The technology platform behind #NYGivesDay, GiveGab, has elected to waive their 5% platform fee for any nonprofit that participates on November 29, 2016. As a donor, you will have the option to cover this fee for the organization.


Can donors make donations via their mobile device?

Yes! Simply visit www.NYGivesDay.org or use links sent by participating nonprofits on November 29, 2016, on your mobile device.


Who will receive my contact information?

#NYGivesDay and the organization(s) you support will receive the donor name and email. This information is used solely to send a Thank You and provide you the option to receive future notifications about the nonprofit’s activities.

You have the option to make your donation anonymous. Anonymous donations will be displayed as "Anonymous." on the organization's page. Organizations will still have access to your name and email address.


Is my donation tax deductible?

Only IRS registered 501( c ) organizations are eligible to participate in #NYGivesDay. While many of the donations made to organizations participating in www.NYGivesDay.org will be tax-deductible, you should consult your tax professional to confirm. Donations will be processed by GiveGab, the technology partner in #NYGivesDay, and receipted on behalf of the nonprofit organization that received the donation.


As a donor, do I need to create an account with GiveGab?

No, donors do not need to create an account to make a donation. A donor account will, however, collect your donation receipts in one location, enabling you to track your donations, follow the charities you support, and engage in future volunteering and donations. Your donation receipt is emailed to you immediately upon processing your donation.

What is ROC the Day?

ROC the Day is the Greater Rochester region’s 24-hour online giving event. This year, ROC the Day falls on November 29 to coincide with the national Giving Tuesday event. More than 600 organizations join the event each year to connect with thousands of donors who give an end-of-year boost to their favorite causes. ROC the Day is free to participate and open to 501(c)3 organizations that serve Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wyoming, Wayne and Yates counties. Donors can make a real difference by giving to one or multiple organizations to support their personal philanthropic passions. It’s an easy, one-stop way for them to fill their “cart” with causes that matter most to them. ROC the Day has raised more than $4 million for the Greater Rochester community in just five 24-hour events. It’s a great way to rally non-profits, donors and the Greater Rochester community to make a difference together.


What is the relation with ROC the Day and NYGD?

#NYGivesDay is a 24-hour online challenge to celebrate nonprofits across the state of New York, taking place on Giving Tuesday. Thousands of nonprofits across the Empire State will work together to raise awareness, collect donations, and build a stronger sense of philanthropy throughout their local communities.

ROC the Day is one Giving Tuesday effort in New York State that encompasses the entire Greater Rochester region. New York Gives Day will support non-profits throughout the state that are outside of the nine-county Greater Rochester region.


Can non-profits participate in both?

Yes, however we recommend working with only one platform on Giving Tuesday. Donors may be confused about where to make a donation if your organization is sending messages about giving on both/either platforms. Remember that for a day of giving event to be successful, it requires active promotion from the participating non-profits to spread the word about the event and their own cause with a specific call to action with one central location or link for donations.

For the hundreds of non-profits in the Greater Rochester region, we encourage participation in ROC the Day to join in the momentum and community spirit from five previous annual events. ROC the Day has raised more than $4 million collectively in just five days of giving in the past five years. ROC the Day donations are raised for and go directly to the charities participating in the local nine-county Greater Rochester region.


What if a donor wants to give to my organization through the other platform?

It’s important to steer your donors to one consistent platform. If you are participating on both platforms, however, donors can find you in both spots.


What region does ROC the Day cover?

ROC the Day is free to participate and open to 501(c)3 organizations that serve Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wyoming, Wayne and Yates counties.


Why doesn’t ROC the Day merge with #NYGivesDay?

We’re all collectively a part of Giving Tuesday to help connect donors to the organizations doing great work in our communities. ROC the Day began six years ago with a platform that is tailored specifically to the local Greater Rochester region and it has more than 600 local non-profits connected to its current event and donation platform. #NYGivesDay is in its first year, and will be working with non-profits and associations to create a great event and giving experience for the rest of the state. ROC the Day and #NYGivesDay are working closely to help any non-profits that might cross over regions, but at this time we will have separate donation platforms for the events.
